1) Understaffed and Overextended: A Case Study of Burnout in a Dental School
Author Details: Shulan N. Allen-University of Technology, Jamaica

Abstract:
When Dr. Marisa Lewis decided to leave her full-time dentist position to become the dean of a Caribbean school named Crestwell School of Dentistry, she was elated about the new environment. However, after 20 years of long working hours and skipping breaks, she was often tired and dissatisfied with her job. Staff meetings showed that people were more frustrated, communication was breaking down, and they were more likely to leave their jobs. The case follows the experiences of a dean, a clinical lecturer, and a final-year student who found the work experience tiring, cynical, and less productive due to overload, a lack of support, and reduced time to relax. The case does not depict burnout as a weakness; rather, it is a systems issue driven by a progressive disparity between the institution and the tools available to meet its needs. The report rationalizes the case and uses the Job Demands-Resources model and burnout theory to frame it theoretically. It concludes that resilience interventions are insufficient and that, unless there is staffing restructuring, more balanced workload allocation, more student support, and leadership behaviors that alleviate the causes of chronic organizational pressure, no significant change will be achieved.

After the choice of a career, Career AI will conduct skill gap analysis and display both the current competencies and required competencies as a visual representation to the user. The system also produces AI-designed learning journeys which comprise official documentation, code examples, quizzes and practice and practice modules. It has an in-built coding environment and a real-time AI assistant, which guides, assists in debugging, and clarifies concepts.
The assessments conducted on the system involving 120 users revealed accurate career recommendation, enhanced learning, and user engagement. The results indicate that Career AI provides an all-encompassing, scalable, and future-proof career discovery and skill development solution, which has combined assessment, guidance, learning, and practice into a single ecosystem.
