1) Strategic Management Analysis of the University of Phoenix (2024)
Author Details: Paul Gramble, CUNY School of Professional Studies Herbert Sherman, Long Island University – Brooklyn
Abstract:
The University of Phoenix (UOP), founded in 1976 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, is a for-profit institution offering flexible online and on-campus higher education programs for working adults. UOP is a significant player in adult education, providing accessible learning for non-traditional students. Its mission is to offer higher education opportunities that help students achieve professional goals, enhance organizational productivity, and contribute to community leadership. The vision is to be the most trusted provider of career-focused education for adult learners.
This analysis explored UOP’s generic strategy and conducts external assessments using PLEST (Political, Legal, Economic, Socio-cultural, Technological factors), Porter’s Five Forces, and competitor analysis. Internally, the VIRO framework, value chain, and functional analyses are applied. The SWOT analysis revealed that UOP’s strengths and opportunities outweighed its weaknesses and threats, enabling it to leverage its strengths and mitigate its weaknesses. However, we identified misalignments between UOP’s mission and current strategy, particularly in public perception and regulatory challenges.
Immediate recommended actions included revising tuition pricing and strengthening marketing to emphasize UOP’s value proposition while long-term actions involved improving academic programs and expanding industry partnerships to boost employability outcomes for graduates. The most critical identified action was to enhance UOP’s reputation and perceived value, aligning with its mission of providing career-relevant education. This analysis highlighted the need for a cohesive strategy that leverages strengths and addresses weaknesses, ensuring UOP fulfilled its mission and maintained its competitive edge in higher education.

2) Turo Peer-to Peer Car Sharing (2025): A Strategic Analysis
Author Details: Troy Ridley, CUNY School of Professional Studies Troy.Ridley@sps.cuny.edu *Herbert Sherman, LIU – Brooklyn Campus *Corresponding Author: Herbert.Sherman@liu.edu
Abstract:
the authors of this manuscript have conducted a strategic analysis of Turo, a peer-to-peer car sharing company that allows individuals to rent out their personal vehicles through a user-friendly digital platform. Similar to Airbnb, Turo rents or leases vehicles without providing drivers, setting Turo apart from ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.  Turo’s car sharing mission is “to put the world’s 1.5 billion cars to better use.”  This analysis describes the firm’s mission and generic strategy (Porter, 1985) employing the following strategic tools: PLEST, Five Forces, VIRO, Value Chain and Functional Analyses culminating in an integrated SWOT analysis.  These qualitative assessments are then subjectively quantified and reported in Table format.  The SWOT table then integrates the prior calculations for each instrument, producing a summated score for OT/SW. The study concludes that Turo operates within a monopolistic competition market structure, characterized by many firms offering differentiated but substitutable products. Numerous misalignments between the firm’s strategy, internal and external environments are denoted followed by suggested actions for realignment and actions needed to be taken.
